ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a French painter and printmaker who became a global art superstar by the age of 20. He is best known for his “Misérabiliste” expressionism, a style that captured the somber, existential mood of post-WWII Europe. His work is instantly recognizable due to several distinct characteristics: Sharp, Angular Lines: His figures and objects are outlined with harsh, black, straight lines that resemble etchings or woodcuts. Muted Palette: He primarily used grays, blacks, ochres, and dull greens—partly due to the scarcity of paint after the war, which later became his signature aesthetic. Melancholy Subjects: His most famous works include gaunt, sad clowns, emaciated figures, desolate cityscapes, and grim religious scenes.
