DESCRIPTION: Large Hispano-Moresque Blue & Copper Lustre Bowl, XVII Century, Spain. Round earthenware dish with metallic reflected decoration of leaves with a central blue floral motif. From the Spanish town of Manise, Valencia. Chips and flakes in the enamel.

CONDITION: Good condition. Wear consistent with age and use.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Manises, Valencia, Spain. A historic Spanish city with centuries-old ceramic tradition and fame. ABOUT THE STYLE: The ceramic is glazed in an enamel bath then fired. After the first firing, the item is cooled and then decorated. The color shades of similar bowls differ due to the different composition of the ingredients consisting of copper, sulphur, iron oxide, vinegar and silver. Once decorated the item goes back into the oven for a final firing.
