DESCRIPTION: Large Hispano-Moresque Copper Lustre Bowl, XVII Century, Spain. Round earthenware dish with metallic reflected decoration of a palm and flowers and with a filleted border. From the Spanish town of Manise, Valencia. Chips and flakes in the enamel and antique stapled crack.
CONDITION: Good condition. Wear consistent with age and use.

ABOUT THE STYLE: The ceramic is glazed in an enamel bath then fired. After the first firing, the item is cooled and then decorated. The color shades of similar bowls differ due to the different composition of the ingredients consisting of copper, sulphur, iron oxide, vinegar and silver. Once decorated the item goes back into the oven for a final firing.
