José Zanine Caldas console table. ‘Denúncia’ series Made with wood. Original and beautiful patina, circa 1970, Brazil. Good vintage condition. Jose Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) was one of Brazil’s foremost architects and furniture designers. Zanine was one of the first truly ecologically conscious artists; he worked exclusively with reclaimed timber for the construction of his homes and the custom furniture that would make up the interiors of his commissions. Inspired by the local craftsmen in Bahia, Brazil, who carved boats and furniture from fallen trees, José Zanine Caldas began carving solid furniture. He called the series of the furniture ‘Móveis Denúncia/ Furniture-Denunciation’.
